Until the USMLE® Step 1 changes to pass/fail (earliest in January 2022) is officially in effect, your Step 1 score will carry its previous weight as a deciding factor on your residency application. Though your residency application as a whole plays an incredibly important role in this process, another part of your application can also make or break your chances of matching into that dream residency: your USMLE® Step 1 score. Throughout medical school, your main goal has likely been working your way up to earning a top-tier residency, in the field and city in which you want to spend a lot of your career.

  • To that end, something I wish I would have done more of (which 2 weeks out might be the perfect time) is the ol strengths (so I can have the confidence boost) and weaknesses and tailored more toward my weaknesses, vs just blasting ahead and trusting I'd cover everything between doing UWorld on random and working through Pathoma, FA, etc. I was definitely on the "i'll be able to figure out any problem because I'm good at critical thinking" side of the study strategy, which is definitely a skill you need, but obviously also you need to be able to identify what conditions the question is asking about.

I would also check out the Free 120 since they have some auscultation problems that are exactly as they appear on Step (I've also heard Amboss has this feature but don't know myself). The question style was the same as NBME or UWorld, the format looks exactly like UWorld (or Rx for people using that, not sure about the other resources). It was definitely hard, but so were the practice exams I was taking and I was trending upward. In retrospect I maybe would have done passive reviews (watching Pathoma, sketchy, etc) even faster so I could have had more time for active learning/synthesis closer to the test. I am excited to get out and crush rotations/Step 2. I definitely don’t know everything, but who ever does? With a week left, I’m starting to feel ready and cautiously optimistic.Īll in all, I’ll make it work. Plus, my UWorld question blocks are averaging between 65-75%. So I’m feeling more confident and like UW1 was not a fluke. *Supposed to be* the most predictive test (*according to the internet). Still, with 2 weeks left to study, feeling confident I can at least make 230’s. Also taking it with a grain of salt because I’ve heard 1) UW1 overpredicts and 2) UW forms are easier than NBME forms. Was not expecting this when I hit finish on that form, but obviously happy. That’s okay because I’m reviewing everything and laying foundations, while my UWorld blocks are improving and helping my critical thinking/application. I start reviewing content faster- getting through more but with less depth. If I can pick up 10 points every week I might not plateau in scores before test day, but I can hit 240!ĭang. At least I’m moving in the right direction.

Not the direction I wanted to be heading, but I still have plenty of time. Disappointed overall, obviously.īaseline exam before dedicated. I was hoping for ~240 and ended up with a 216. Pre-dedicated: in general I'm a pretty avg student grade-wise, but standardized tests are my jam and I'm smart and ready to put in the work. Below are my practice tests (all 1 week apart) as well as some short thoughts/feelings at the time. Hoping to not increase panic for those of you still to test, but to add to the data set.

Just wanted to add my story to those who found their Step 1 score much lower than their Uworld scores.
